2nd graders are great!

Friday, May 21st, 2010
This week I had the opportunity to work with a 2nd grade class on their quilt project for the year.  Once a year, I travel with my little red wagon to teach my classes on Mondays.  I also went into the local school with the Susquehanna Valley Spinners and Weavers guild. and the children watched as 2 sheep were sheared and then they learned by hands on how to use the fleece and turn it into fiber.  Working with 2nd graders is a blessing-they really pay attention and participate.

Playing Ball Story Quilt

Vietnam soldier quilt

During “Savor Selinsgrove” on May 15, The Sewing Shanty will have a quilt and needlepoint display from the mountains of Laos.  Since most Hmong could not read or write, they told their stories through their sewing and embroidery.  The workmanship is amazing.  The scrolls are worked in reverse applique and the stitches are barely visible.  These are original quilts that were produced individually and were not meant for commercial resale.  Stop by the shop, and Rev. Mary Peterhaensel, will tell how she obtained these quilts, while teaching them English.  A one of a kind collection!     Visit www.selinsgrove.net  for more information about May 15TH.  A true learning experience for all.

I am extremely lucky to have 2 talented friends.  Debbie Mote designs fabrics and her house blessing, which was designed as dinner napkins, has been turned into this attractive table center piece or wall hanging by Dena Praul-Gentner of Denajean-Handmade by Design.  Debbie’s design collection can be found at www.Spoonflower.com.  Look for ddmote fabric.
